Can I get a 20 year old assult conviction expunged doing it myself & how?

I am a 51 year old male, who was convicted of assult in 1988, time served (9 months). I went back to work (I worked mostly in Law firms) until 2003, but I continued to work until 2006. I am now unemployed and cannot get hired  because of the criminal backgroound checks that really begun after the 9/11terrorist attack. I found a site that specializes in expunging previous convictions, but I cannot afford thier fees. Can I get my conviction expunged myself and how do I do it.

Thank you

Re: Can I get a 20 year old assult conviction expunged doing it myself & how?

Title 10 of the MD Crim Code provides for expungement of criminal records which you can do by yourself—called pro se, meaning “through the self,” by contacting MD Attorney Generals office to get an expungement package or downloading it from MD’s State website. However, it is advisable to get legal counsel to effectively file your request and also find out if there are other remedies.
